Persona-users
Persona-users are those that have the power to control manifestations of their psyche. These manifestations take the shape of gods and devils, representing the sides of humans. Persona-users can be awakened in a number of ways. Those that have played the Master Persona game are often awakened by a man in a dream, their powers activating when they finally need them. Others awaken by means of stress or near-death experiences, their Personas saving them from danger. Still others can be awakened by using a medium to forcibly eject their personas- though only certain individuals are compatible with this method. Finally, if one encounters their Shadow and accepts them, they can gain the power of a Persona.
The Sennou Corporation has also experimented with Persona-users, forcibly awakening test subjects. Most of these individuals die shortly afterward or suffer from a number of psychological issues or neurological damage.
Devil Summoners
Tamers of inhuman beings, Devil Summoners can contract demons or forcibly subject them if they are strong enough. While they lack Personas, their strengths and weaknesses are often influenced by the demons they have contracted, allowing them to fight on even grounds with Persona-users. Particularly skilled summoners can create rifts between the human and demon world, allowing demons to flow into the human world.
Shadows
Shadows can be split into two groups: Sentient and Autonomous. Autonomous Shadows are simply predatory beings, lacking any instincts besides the need to feed, their food being the minds of humans. This often leads to individuals coming down with the recurring “Apathy Syndrome” that had appeared in Tatsumi Port Island a few years ago. These Shadows only occur during the Midnight Hour. Sentient Shadows, however, are capable of rational thought and possess a will as well as the ability to travel during the day. Sentient Shadows are split further into two groups- Embodiments of the Tarots, which are a by-product of the Sennou Corporation's experiments, or Rift Shadows.
The Embodiments are numbered at twenty- one for each of the tarots from The Magician to The Judgment. Each Embodiment is a personification of their respective tarot in some way, shape, or form, and are the most powerful of Shadows.
Rift Shadows are Shadows that have risen out of the darker sides of those that have entered the Rift. These Shadows are unable to exit the Rift until they've found their human counterpart. If rejected, Rift Shadows discard their human appearance, and, if left unopposed, they will slay their human counterpart, taking their place and attempting to exit the Rift. In some cases, however, these are unable to find exits, given the Rift's unstable nature. Rift Shadows that remain in the Rift too long after acquiring their “self” will slowly degenerate into autonomous Shadows.
Shadow Selves
Not to be confused with Rift Shadows, Shadow Selves are the alternative to Rift Shadows for those with Personas that enter the Rift. Shadow Selves, unlike Rift Shadows, can exit the Rift, even if they have not faced their human counterpart. Where Rift Shadows are the embodiment of one's darker sides, Shadow Selves are the “ideal” selves of individuals. Where Rift Shadows can only discard their appearance and become Shadows to slay their counterparts, Shadow Selves are fully capable of using Personas as well- usually either the same Persona as their human counterpart, or the “true” form of the Persona. Shadow Selves react differently to their counterparts, depending on the case. Some aim to urge their counterpart closer to their true self, while others view their incomplete counterpart as insignificant and attempt to slay them.
Shadow Selves are much more powerful than Rift Shadows, and, in most cases, can best their human counterpart if they are alone, as their Personas are the idealized form, with powerful abilities and greater resistances. Those facing their Shadow Selves must have others with them, or have a special advantage, as a Shadow Self will always win in a one-on-one head-on fight. Those that face and overcome their Shadow Self awaken to greater power, sometimes in the form of Persona Evolution, while other times empowering their Persona.
Demons
Every culture has them. Demons come in many shapes and sizes, and have as many flavors as there are types of people. This is because demons are composed in much the same way as humans, capable of the same emotions. Demons come when summoned to this realm by Devil Summoners, but others still drift in when portals or summoning circles are left unattended. Some demons can summon other demons, as well. Some demons are more powerful than others, with some being harmless, to others rivaling or even over-powering Persona-users or Shadows.
