Frequently Asked Questions
“So what is this board?”
Walpurgis Night is a non-canon Persona role-play. It accomodates all four (five, if you want to be exceedingly technical) games, from 1 to 4. We do not tie in to any of the games' plots specifically, so no actual knowledge regarding a specific entry's plot is necessary, and you should be safe from spoilers. As far as dates go, we're a few years after Persona 4, taking place in 2015.
“Do I have to play Persona to join?”
Absolutely, definitely, postively- not! You need no prior experience with Persona in order to join. If you have any questions, you should read on, as there's a list of terms for those not familiar with the whole series, along with clarifications that not everybody knows about. If it turns out that that doesn't answer your questions, feel free to ask a member of staff in the cbox, or, if none are around at the time, post a thread in the guest-friendly segment. We'll try to get to you as soon as physically possible. If you're looking to get a quick dive into the series, though, but don't wanna buy the games, the Persona 4 Animation is fairly faithful to the source material so far, and can be found in a number of places.
“I want to play a demon, but wouldn't that make it hard to play in more social environments?”
Not at all. Demons in this play are capable of disguising themselves- either as humans or as animals. While not explicitly stated in the games, it would make sense, since NPCs never seemed to notice demons running in front of them in 2.
“So which classes have Personas?”
Persona-users and Shadow Selves have Personas. Devil Summoners, for the sake of balance on the board, can only use demons. Rift Shadows and the Embodiments both have Shadow forms- essentially shapeshifting into forms more fit for combat. Demons hiding in disguise can simply revert to their demon form to fight.
“I want a certain Persona, but it's skills are kinda weak./I want to start out weak, but do I need to evolve my Persona?”
If you want to use a canon Persona, but it's either low-leveled, or has only lower-level skills in canon, don't worry about it. A Persona's skills and attributes improve over time- generally, the longer and more frequent a person uses their Persona, the stronger it will be. For example: If you want to use Jack Frost, and your character has been a user for a year, going out on hunts somewhat frequently, it'd be perfectly fine for him to have Bufudyne, Mabufudyne, or even Niflheim! Just please keep the skills relevant to the Persona. Using the above example, giving Jack Frost Ragnarok, or any fire skill for that matter, or a Slash-based physical skill wouldn't really make too much sense.
Going further, if your canon Persona of choice is low-leveled and blocks no elements, but has resistances to something, while being weak to others, feel free to upgrade the resistance to blocking against one or two of them.
“I'd like to evolve my character's Persona later, but I'm not sure about how. Does my character have to fight their Shadow Self, or can they have emotional growth?”
It can be emotional growth, or it could be that their growth coincides with facing their ideal self. Essentially, facing one's Shadow Self just empowers their Persona- perhaps unlocking a powerful skill, or enhancing their resistance to something. Besides, it wouldn't be fair to limit evolution only to those with Shadow Selves, since those that gain a Persona by facing their Rift Shadow don't have that option.
“We can use items?”
Yes, actually. I'm not sure how I feel about items like the gems in the games just yet, but if you want your character to have prepared a molotov cocktail, or something else that could somehow be used for in combat, feel free! Just. . . try not to wield a pocket dimension, please.
“How does combat work?”
I'm nipping this in the bud right now, since most boards don't address it from the start. For starters, Personas and demon can interact with physical beings and structures. Collateral damage and injuries to buildings and people respectively are possible. Personas and demons remain out when summoned until dismissed, or, in the case of a Persona-user, when consciousness is lost, or are otherwise incapacitated.
Civilians, or just normal humans, can be killed exceedingly easily by any of the forces. Persona-users and Devil Summoners and any type of Shadow and demons are all much more resistant to damage than normal humans. Persona-users gain this resistance through their Persona, while Devil Summoners gain their resistance by contracting demons- gaining the same weaknesses and strengths. Shadows and demons are just naturally resistant- they're not human, after all.
We do not include HP, SP, experience, or levels. Health can be compared to endurance, while SP can be compared to “mental strength”- yes, it sounds stupid, but it seemed the best to call it at the time. Persona-users are worn down physically by physical attacks, while magic, and any attacks on their Persona, wear down on their mind. Devil Summoners, while separate from their demon, can lose all of their resistance if their demon partner dies. Shadows and demons respectively show signs of wounds, but can easily reconstruct their appearance. When anybody takes enough mental or physical damage, they can be incapacitated, or, if enough damage has accumulated, be outright killed.
Recent deaths (read, up to, maybe, thirty minutes), can be counteracted by Recarm, or any other choice of revival ability that applies. Those that are only unconscious or wounded can be healed by Dia, or any other similar healing abilities.
“Will the stats of our Personas/Demons/etc affect anything out of fighting?”
Actually, yes, but not immensely. For Persona-users and Devil Summoners, small boosts to an individual's strength, speed, or whatnot can actually occur- this is separate from their increased resistance, mind you. For example, a character with a Persona that has an excess in physical strength may be able to perform better in terms of sports or the like, whereas one with an excess of luck may be able to get by with more when playing games based on chance. For Shadows and Demons, this is irrelevant due to the fact that their human forms are already a bit more powerful than the average human.
“Why are there so many elements?! Persona 3 and 4 only had-”
The list of elements we have was filled in by taking elements from Persona and Persona 2. We implemented that many because, one, we are accomodating the whole series, and, two, it allows for more variety in skill sheets and strengths and weaknesses. This also lowers the chances that two people will automatically have the weakness of their opponent in fighting.
“Why isn't my favorite status effect allowed/Why aren't light and dark kill-moves?”
Some statuses and their related skills have been removed because they were either too tied in to RPG mechanics, or they broke some degree of fairness in the system. Light and dark spells, along with anything else that would have instantly killed a target, have been changed. We don't want instant death moves.
